After COVID, everyone and their dog thought, “I could run a doggy daycare!” And a lot of people did. The problem? Most of those businesses didn’t survive six months. During that time, vets were flooded with dogs coming in stressed, sick, or injured from unlicensed daycares. Loving dogs isn’t enough! Running a daycare is fun, but it’s serious work. Safety, structure, and professionalism aren’t optional; they’re the backbone of your business.
1. Group Dynamics Matter More Than You Think
Even the sweetest pups can clash if their energy levels don’t match. Pair a hyper Collie with a chilled Labrador and you’ve got chaos brewing. I always match energy levels first, then size. Watch interactions closely and separate dogs early if tension rises. It saves stress, fights and yes… vet bills.
2. Don’t Skip the Routine
Dogs thrive on predictability. Miss walks, meals or nap times and you’ll have anxious, overexcited little monsters on your hands. During the COVID surge, so many daycares crumbled because they had zero structure. Make a clear daily routine and stick to it. Your dogs, your sanity and your customers will all thank you.
3. Keep Your Owners in the Loop
Owners want reassurance that their fur babies are safe and happy. No updates? Panic sets in. Biggest difference maker for me was to send “pupdates” throughout the day, photos, short videos, even quick voice notes. It calms owners, builds trust and yes, doubles as subtle marketing.
4. Safety Isn’t Optional
Off-lead walks, playtime and overnight stays all carry risk. One slip, one distracted second and it’s a trip to the vet and your reputation on the line. Always have escape plans, emergency contacts and first aid ready. During the rush of unlicensed setups, dogs were getting hurt and that’s exactly what we aim to prevent.
5. Master Your Service Before Expanding
Adding boarding, transport or training before perfecting your core services? From experience, this could be a BIG mistake. Spread yourself too thin and everything goes sideways fast. Nail your main services first, grow wisely and expand gradually. Having solid foundations will keep dogs safe, owners happy and stress levels manageable.
