Preparing your Dogs for Bonfire Night

Bonfires, Fireworks & Fearful dogs: Preparing your Dogs for Bonfire Night.

Bonfire Night is one of the toughest times of year for dogs. The loud bangs, flashing lights and unfamiliar smells can cause them real distress. Whether you’re a dog owner or you run a doggy daycare, knowing how to calm dogs during fireworks can make all the difference.

Here’s how to prepare for Bonfire Night and keep all those tails wagging.

Fireworks might be fun for us, but for many dogs, they’re a source of stress and fear. As a doggy day care/boarder, you have the opportunity/responsibility to turn a scary night into a soothing experience. Here’s how to create a calm, fear-free environment and support your customers in doing the same.

Why Do Dogs Get Scared of Fireworks?

Dogs hear at much higher frequencies than humans, so those unpredictable explosions sound like thunder in their ears. Add in the flickering lights, vibrations, strange smells and it’s no wonder many dogs become anxious or try to escape.

Fireworks also appear without warning. Dogs don’t understand why the noise is happening or when it will stop, so they naturally go into fight or flight mode.

How to Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

If you run a doggy daycare or boarding business, you can make Bonfire Night less frightening with a few simple adjustments:

Soundproof the space: Use heavy curtains, rugs and soft furnishings to muffle noise.

Create Safe retreats: Set up crates, dens or quiet corners with blankets and familiar toys.

Dim the lighting: Soft, warm light reduces the impact of sudden flashes.

Play calming sounds: Turn on a radio, TV to mask firework bangs.

Stay calm and close: Dogs feed off our energy. If you stay relaxed and nearby, they’ll mirror it.

Even small changes can make a huge difference. Your business can become a true sanctuary on one of the loudest nights of the year.

Dog Daycare Tips for Bonfire Night

We asked Laura at All Shapes & Sizes Pet Care (ASAS) how she prepares for firework season, here’s what she shared:

  • We stimulate our dogs earlier in the day with play and enrichment so they’re calmer by evening.
  • We double-check ID tags on collars. Scared dogs can bolt!
  • As fireworks start, we close all blinds, curtains, and windows to reduce noise and flashes.
  • We spray calming products and set up safe spots where dogs can take themselves off if they want space.
  • Some wear earmuffs to help block the noise.
  • We sit with them on the sofa, watching a calming film, cuddling, and reassuring them until it’s over.”

“We also prepare for the practical stuff, like knowing they may not want to go outside to go toilet. We set up puppy pads in common areas just in case. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”

Fireworks don’t have to mean fear. With preparation, calm energy and a few clever tricks, you can help dogs feel safe and secure.
